General Council appoints Azevêdo as next Director-General of the WTO

At a special meeting, earliert today, the General Council approved the appointment of Ambassador Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo (Brazil) as the next Director-General of the WTO. He begins his term of office on 1 September 2013. Director-General Pascal Lamy pledged to work closely with Ambassador Azevêdo in ensuring a smooth transition. You can find more information here

Troika recommends Carvalho de Azevêdo to be the next WTO DG

At an informal meeting of the Heads of Delegation, earliert today, the three facilitators in the process of selecting the next WTO Director-General recommended Ambassador Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo (Brazil) as the candidate who can gain consensus approval of WTO members. The facilitators suggested that members approve Amb. Azevêdo as Director-General at the General Council meeting on 14 May 2013. You can find the statement by Chair here

AB issues reports on renewable energy dispute

Earlier today, the WTO Appellate Body issued its reports in the cases “Canada – Certain Measures Affecting the Renewable Energy Generation Sector” (DS412) and “Canada – Measures Relating to the Feed in Tariff Program” (DS426), respectively. The report broadly backs the arguments of Japan and the EU over the Canadian province of Ontario’s preferential treatment for local firms in promoting renewable energy. Tel Aviv awarded #2 most innovative city in the world

Tel Aviv has been ranked the world’s second “most innovative city” as part of the Wall Street Journal magazine and Citibank’s City of the Year contest, organized by the non-profit Urban Land Institute.

According to YnetNews, Tel Aviv was among the three cities which made it to the final out of 200. The winner was Medellin in Colombia. New York City came in third. The results were determined by online voters and Urban Land Institute judges.
