Coimbatore, also known as Kovai is a major and second largest city in Tamil Nadu and 16th largest urban agglomeration in India. It is one of the fastest growing Tier II Cities and a major hub for textiles, industries-automotive and engineering, commerce, education, information technology, healthcare and manufacturing. It is referred to as the “Manchester of South India“ due to its cotton production and textile industries. Coimbatore is also referred to as the “Pump City” and it supplies nearly half of India’s requirements of motors and pumps. The city is one of the largest exporters of jewellery, wet grinders, poultry and auto components.
Recently, Dr. Shai Moses the Israeli Economic Consul to South India, and myself, visited Coimbatore and met, among many others, the Vice Chancellor and his team of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, the Secretary and Treasurer of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the President, Secretary and other members of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association which has more than 2000 members. The meetings were very productive and positive approach felt and in all the meetings, we received keen interest for collaboration with Israeli companies and adoption of Israeli technologies, be it in, water, agriculture, renewable energy, and other relevant sector to the respective line of business.

The visit also included a visit to the dairy plant of Sakthi Group – ABT Food Industries. Sakthi Group, is an 1.2 billion US$ Industrial Conglomerate and one of the fastest growing business groups in South India. ABT Foods is an umbrella brand for non-dairy products.
