Cryoablation is the use of extreme cold to destroy body tissues. The tumor is frozen by inserting a cryoprobe into it then delivering a gas with a sub-zero boiling point to the probe tip, where it absorbs tissue-generated heat until it boils and the tissue freezes. The result: a reduced risk for tumor regrowth or metastasis. Necrotic debris is eventually reabsorbed by the body, leaving no artifacts to complicate diagnostic accuracy.
IceCure Medical from Israel has developed and markets minimally invasive cryoablation therapies for women’s health and general oncology market. Their proprietary IceSense3™ and ProSense systems provide minimally invasive, in-office definitive treatment for symptomatic tumors in various organs.
The procedure is an attractive alternative to the current standard treatment of open surgical excision.
The procedure is done under ultrasound or CT imaging to guide a small probe (thin hollow needle) into the tumor. The system then uses extremely cold temperatures to destroy (ablate) the targeted tumor in situ. The cryoablation procedure is a safe and effective treatment option that can be performed in a short time in the comfort of a doctor’s office.
