On March 8th, 2015 at Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel Bangkok, the Economic and Trade Mission, Embassy of Israel in Thailand, had a pleasure of hosting an event to support Thailand Innovation and Entrepreneurship Eco-System.

Dr. Yossi Vardi, the Guru of Israel Startups and the Godfather of Israel’s High-Tech and Innovation, shared with us the ways in which Israel could contribute to help accelerating the Thai Startups Ecosystem. Dr. Vardi, emphasized the changes currently occurring in the world of startups financing in the way of financial shift from VCs investment into MNCs investment and the realization of the big corporations that without investment in startups they will be very limited in acquiring cutting edge technologies to their companies and obtaining an added value over their competitors.

In this event, we also had an honorable guest speaker, Mr. Pairoj Waiwanijchakij, Vice President – Digital Product Management of AIS to share with us AIS’ view from his experience and knowledge  regarding AIS’s 2015 Vision: Life Digital Life More & The Needs of Innovation.

He agreed with Dr. Vardi’s and said that “Big corporations cannot ignore startups and that is why AIS began to integrate with Thai startups.”

During the second part of the event, we had the honor to host a panel discussion, which consisted of Thailand top tech contributors (OLX, HUBBA, LINKS, Software Park), as well as top Israeli experienced speakers from Leading Corporation throughout ASIA (AGODA, Flash Networks, Pontis).

The Panelists discussed the following topics, sharing their views and experience with the event participants alongside with Dr. Vardi and Mr. Barak Sharabi, Head of Economic and Mission:

  • Strength of the Israeli companies: Technology, Finance, Eco-System
  • Challenges of the Thai startup eco-system
  • Collaborations between Israeli and Thai Start-ups: Experience vs. Understanding a market, Financing methods, TRF/Matimop (GOV support)
  • Emerging Thai startup trends in 2015 and before AEC
  • Corporations and Startups – the future driver of Thai tech ecosystem

Mr. Amarit Charoenphan, Deputy Managing Director of Hubba, summarized his view about boosting the Thai Ecosystem by saying an event like this is exactly what Thailand requires in order to boosts the innovation and entrepreneurship eco-system and he would have loved to see more Thai startups participating in such events.

The participants in our event were from all over the Thai ecosystem – Private Companies, from both Thailand and Israel, Startups, Governments, Academia and related professionals.
