The company NanoScent is working hard to develop a COVID-19 diagnostic sensor based on scent recognition. Recently, the Japanese company Sumitomo Chemical made a decision to provide about 70% of the funds to develop the sensor.
The sensor combines digital technology with nanoscale materials, called chemiresistors, which change their electrical resistance in response to chemicals in the environment. If successful, the sensor would be able to rapidly detect viral infections from exhaled breath, including the COVID-19.The technology can become an invaluable solution used for screening at borders, airports, and hospitals.
