“Pasco project:” Award-winning U.S. winemaker returns to Israel, crafts new bordeaux-style blend for the holidays

pascoFEBRUARY 2014 — Winemaker Lewis Pasco has returned to Israel to create “The Pasco Project #1.” Set to debut at selected U.S. retailers in early March, in time for Purim, for an approximate retail price of $25 – 28, Pasco’s new wine is a bold red Bordeaux blend, certified Kosher Le’Mehadrin for year-round consumption, including Passover. The wine is intended both for kosher wine connoisseurs and for enjoyment by a broader U.S. fine wine market now starting to discover the appealing Mediterranean flavors of Israeli wines.

The 2012 Pasco Project #1 wine presents bold flavors that highlight the superb quality of grapes grown at high elevations in select micro-climates in Israel’s Shomron appellation. Rounded out by nine months’ aging in French oak barrels, the wine should remind consumers of the rich yet elegant red wines Pasco pioneered at Recanati from vintages 2000 through 2007.

Pasco’s latest wine is a Bordeaux style blend comprising 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 4% Petite Sirah. Each lot was hand-harvested, vinified and aged separately before assembly of the final blend. The wine was made using traditional, low-tech methods, including punch-down fermentations and minimal filtration. The Pasco Project #1 shows elements of each of its components: the rich fruit and body of the Cabernet, the floral, herbal-toned aroma of the Merlot, and the earthy notes, structure and deep color of the Petite Sirah.

“I returned to Israel in 2012 in the knowledge that the growing season had been close to perfect. From my extensive experience in Israel, I knew that the Shomron appellation possesses ideal red soils, along with the topography and micro-climate tailor-made for production of outstanding red wines. The only surprise on my return was the extent to which the Shomron had been planted with wine grapes, and the dedication to quality viticulture exhibited throughout these vineyards.”

Lewis Pasco has over 20 years’ experience since graduating from the U.C. Davis Master’s program in Enology. Pasco’s wines achieved the unique accomplishment of winning the “Best Wine of Israel” Trophy from Vinexpo, Bordeaux (the world’s most prestigious wine exposition) three times in five years in 2001, 2004, and 2005. He returned to Israel in 2012 to consult for a select few wineries while also creating his own label of hand-crafted ultra-premium red Kosher wines.

The Pasco Project #1 is imported and distributed by Allied Importers USA Ltd of Long Island City, NY.
